What's a Seed Lending Library?

Come to the Jericho Town Library and “borrow” seeds for free! You may be asking, “How can you ‘borrow’ seeds?” The basic is idea is that you select seeds, plant the seeds, let some plants "go to seed", then return some of these next generation seeds for others to borrow. (Don’t worry. We don’t have fines if you don’t return seeds.)
We encourage beginner seed savers to save "super easy" plants: lettuce, beans, peas and peppers. (Some extra know-how needed for peppers.)
Let's Grow Jericho! is a community garden program hosted by JTL library. You do not need to have a library card to use the seed library, but we do ask people to become members of the Seed Lending Library. We provide free classes on organic gardening and seed saving, and of course, you can also borrow books from the library on these topics.
To learn how to check out seeds, contact the library to arrange a Seed Lending Library Orientation. This session introduces you to the seed catalog. Learn how the seed library is organized, "check-out" seeds, and track your returns. Email Colleen to learn more.
Become a member of our Seed Library!
Our innovative seed library program is based on the popular “Community Reads” programs organized by libraries all over the country. By encouraging every member in the Seed Library to grow and collect organic seeds, we’ll be able to connect all of our gardens into one local seed farm—growing enough seeds to share with friends, family, and our communities. Membership is FREE and easy. Email Colleen to learn more!
